Meet Renaldo – July’s MVC

Renaldo, aka Merman, has been named July’s Most Valuable Chicken because he’s really coming into adolescence nicely – protecting our hens without being too boisterous. Renaldo was born on April 20th this year and we purchased him in a mix of pullets we bought at Tractor Supply. We’ve mostly been lucky getting only hens in our pullet purchases so we didn’t pay much attention to gender and instead focused on baby chick cuteness overload.

Originally named Mermaid, he went undetected as a rooster until early June when we started noticing some facial “development”. Mermaid then became known as Merman.

With the athleticism, prowess, and leadership we’ve seen from him in the coop we decided to give him his grown up name “Renaldo” which is our nod to Cristiano Renaldo (yes, Champion League is a big deal in our family).

We brought the baby chicks outside for exploration time during the warm days in May.

Renaldo is one of 4 Light Brahma chickens we bought in April – our first Brahma. Renaldo and the 3 hens are all easy going, curious, and not at all aggressive. They are extremely soft and occasionally like to perch in a lap. It’s of course highly entertaining watching them run around with their feathered feet.

Thankfully they’re doing really well in our warm/hot summer. Renaldo is a real champ!

Even towards the end of May Ronaldo / Merman / Mermaid still had us thinking he was a pullet
At 1 month old they went to live in their chicken coop and run full time. The weather was consistently warm and their new coop was just right for them to easily access. Renaldo is here perched just like one of the hens.
